Okaloosa County Alumnae Chapter has been a beacon of light in Okaloosa County, Florida since our chartering on March 20,1982 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The official chartering was performed by Kathleen Cooper Wright, Southern Regional Director.
In an effort to enrich the lives of all citizens in Okaloosa County, especially the African American communities, Sherri Edwards, Vivian Green and Caroline Allen initiated a search to find members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
On April 7, 1981 nine enthusiastic Deltas held an organizational meeting at the home of Eleanor Johnson in Fort Walton Beach, Florida to develop plans for chartering a chapter, appoint temporary officers and assign committees. Deltas involved in establishing a local chapter included: Caroline Allen, Vivian Green, Eleanor Johnson, Mamie Jolly, Cassandra Ledbetter, Toni Powell, Robin Radford, Yvonne Ward and Wilma (Yates) Shaw. The next meeting was held at Johnson’s home on April 27, 1981.
During the summer months a concerted effort was made to locate other Deltas in Okaloosa County. By September 1981, three more members were located; thereby, increasing the group to twelve.
